Within the microdosing research landscape, the research molecule methallylescalin is a more recent discovery. It is found to be a suitable alternative to mescaline, the active ingredient in San Pedro Cacti.

    Good to know

4-Metallyloxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine (also known as methallylescalin and MAL) is a legal synthetic psychedelic of the chemical class phenethylamine. It is said to have hallucinogenic and stimulant effects similar to those of mescaline when administered.

The effects of methallylescalin were first described by Alexander Shulgin in his book PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story. He lists the dosage range as 20mg to 40mg orally and describes the duration of action as 8 - 12 hours, whereas for microdosing research, the assumed range is between 2mg to 4mg.

Very little data exists on the pharmacological properties, metabolism and toxicity of methallylescalin, and it has little history of human use. Thus, there’s difficulty in conducting scientific research on this analogue of mescaline in humans.

Methallylescaline, or 4-methallyloxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine, is a substituted phenethylamine with a phenyl ring bound to an amino group (NH2) via an ethyl chain. Methallylescaline contains two methoxy functional groups (CH3O-) attached to carbons R3 and R5 of the phenyl ring.

Methallylescalin is replaced by a methallyloxy chain at R4. These three carbon chains consist of an R2 methyl-substituted allyl group with a double bond on the terminal carbon. This chain is connected to the phenyl ring at R4 via an ether (oxygen) bridge.
